Clean a Keurig coffee maker the right way..do's and don'ts!

The Keurig is a revolutionary coffee machine that makes use of K-cups which are pods inserted in the machine. Then you then press a button and instant hot coffee is delivered to your cup. There are various flavors of the K-cups and other companies incorporated the technology in other beverages. The Keurig is a low maintenance machine but at some point you need to clean it up. This is because over a period grime starts to clog up the interior and it starts to malfunction so this is where cleaning is needed to keep it functional. Items for cleaning

  • A microfiber cloth

  • Descaling solution

  • White vinegar

  • Soapy water

  • Paper clip

1. Cleaning the disassembled parts

  • Unplug the machine from the wall

  • Let it cool down

  • Disassemble the K-cup holder and funnel (refer to manual)

  • Wash both parts in a sink with soapy water

  • Use a paperclip to loosen any grime clogging the needle

  • Allow to dry (you can use a lint free cloth)

2. Descale the Keurig coffee maker

  • Go back to the unplugged machine

  • Empty water reservoir

  • Fill the reservoir with descaling solution and water (refer to bottle for proportions)

  • You can also use white vinegar diluted 1:1 with clean water. The acidic vinegar removes the scales but doesn't damage the machine.

  • Place a mug under the spout and press the brew button. Collect the solution that comes out until all is finished

  • Empty the solution in the mug and replace the reservoir with about 200mls of clean water

  • Repeat the brewing process giving 30 minute intervals to give time for the cleaning agents to work

  • Now remove the reservoir and rinse it with water

  • Fill it to the line and repeat brewing process again until all the water is finished.

  • That's all!

3. Other external parts

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe any gently dirt on the exterior

  • Use soapy solution as a cleaning agent

  • Also use a small brush to clean crevices

  • Caution! Do not submerge the machine in water
