4 STEPS to stop a nosebleed, and what NOT TO DO

Two things that people don't want to see and gives them great discomfort are blood and pain. The sight of blood can actually cause some to faint. Nose bleeding presents a challenging situation when not managed properly. However, the majority of nose bleeding can be stopped within a short space of time. In this post we look at how you stop epistaxis effectively (also called nosebleeding). If you are having problems with severe heavy periods read here.

Only cases where there is a bleeding disorder are a bit tricky to manage. If you start nose bleeding and you are taking blood thinning medications like warfarin, or you have another diagnosed bleeding problem you have to see your Doctor. However, the other cases of spontaneous bleeding can be stopped by the following steps:

1. Relax and find a place to rest

The first thing you want to do is rest as any increased activity will cause more bleeding because the heart pumps faster and there is increased circulation. A cool place to rest also reduces vasodilation of vessels.

2. Pinch the soft part of your nose to stop epistaxis

Next your have to pinch the soft cartilaginous part of your nose with gentle pressure with the thumb and index finger of 1 hand, to apply pressure on the bleeding vessels for 5 to 10 minutes. This promotes hemostasis and bleeding stops. It's the same principle used when you get pricked by a nurse to get some blood for a test and you're told to press the pricked tip of your finger with a cotton swab. Bleeding always stops unless there are bleeding disorders that I highlighted before.

3. Lean forward

Do that so that you don't swallow the blood because it may cause abdominal discomfort.

4. Stay in the right position

Make sure the head is above the level of the heart all the time. Don't lie down or put your head between your legs. This may increase blood flow to the nose and cause more bleeding.

In almost all the cases nosebleeding should stop. Make sure you stay in a cool environment. Apply cold compresses to the nose to reduce blood flow and that is how you stop epistaxis fast. However, if bleeding persists see your Doctor, you'll be fine.
